The Citadel - die Zitadelle - in Spandau near Berlin

Spandau is a city to the west of Berlin that is older than Berlin, but got 'gobbled up' by Berlin back in the 1920's (just think LA expansion). Spandau has an old fort built in the 1500's on top of an older Slavic fort called the Citadel. Some of us went to visit, so come along...

Serene, eh?

The entrance to the Zitadelle. It was besieged by the Swedes during the 30 Years' War and also Napoleon had a turn at it.

The tower in the back is called the Julius Tower.

The Julius Tower held the war reparations from the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 - and they had quite the door to protect it!

Looking up.....

Looking down....

Freedom from the Tower is almost ours....just a few more steps....

The views are nice. The Citadel is surrounded by water and forests....and then off in the distance does anyone recognize that? YES! It's the Eiffel Tower (as a kid said whilst we were there ;) i.e. my Funkturm!

Putting this in for Mommy's sake - and the North Pole shirts 'keep going, and going and going' (they are great!)...

That is the Spandau Nikolia Church in the background....

'Camelot!.....Camelot!....' (came to my mind as I took this pic ;)

Kids have a 'summer camp' here! Pretty cool, eh?

'We the knights of the.....Zitadelle, do hereby swear to....'

Goodbye Zitadelle! Thanks for letting us visit....
